Makhana or Fox-nuts are something every Indian household is familiar of.Often served as prashad/offerings in temple, Makhana is also widely used in variety of dishes.The most common and famous use of Makhana is in the form of pudding/khir. Makhana has a chewy texture but when used with milk in preparing khir it becomes soft .Similarly when roasted they become crispy and get a nice crunch.

Makhana/fox-nuts are low in cholesterol,fat and sodium and rich in protein making them an extremely healthy snack option.
They are extremely low in calories which also aids in weight loss.

Roasted Makhana/fox-nut snack makes a healthy snack option ,which can be had ANYTIME hunger pangs kicks in and is also a great tea time snack.Roasted Makhana has an uncanny similarity with Popcorn,provided it is a much more healthier option.
Roasted Makhana can be made in a span of time and with very simple ingredients.


Makhana/fox-nuts-2 cups
Assorted nuts(almonds,cashew nuts)-1/2 cup
Black raisins-1/4 cup
Ghee/clarified butter-3 tbsp
Black pepper- 1 tsp
Salt as per taste

1.Heat 2 tablespoons of Ghee/clarified butter in a pan.
2.Roast Makhana on a low flame for about 10-15 minutes till they become crisp.
3.Remove the roasted Makhana from the pan.
4.Take the remaining ghee in the pan and roast nuts in it.
5.Mix the roasted nuts ,makhana and raisins.
6.Finally sprinkle salt and pepper.
7.Cool and store in air tight container.
